The Certificate in Out-of-School Time Education is designed with the flexibility necessary to meet the diverse needs of the out-of-school time workforce. Choose courses and content to fit your needs, at your site, for the children and youth you serve.
ED 561 Teaching and Learning in Out-of-School Time Summer
This course provides an in-depth look at out-of-school time education, including the history and changing needs of out-of-school time programs: materials, methodology and infrastructure; school and community connections; and program evaluation and quality assurance. The instructional approach of this course models processes of participatory learning and reflective practice, actively linking concepts, content, and hands-on experience.

ED 517 Human Development: The School Years K-12 Spring
As the second requisite of the certificate program, this course will be offered as a special session for CAE students. The course examines cognitive, social, emotional and physiological development during childhood and adolescence and identifies specific areas in which the out-of-school time environment supports development, as well as how understanding development stages impacts planning and delivery of programming.

ED 634 Managing Educational Organizations Spring, Fall
This course provides students with the resources, experiences and knowledge that will equip them to begin to understand the principles, theories and realities of managing educational organizations and effectively leading an educational organization through change. Strategic planning, developing a vision and mission, and promoting continuous and sustained school improvement are highlighted in this course. Strategies for employing data-driven decision making and monitoring and evaluating school progress are also included. The course also covers the study of organizational charts as well as management and operational systems within a school and school district.
HE 584 Grant Writing Fall
This course introduces COSTE students to the nonprofit sector and the principles and procedures for writing grant proposals to fund educational programming. Students will write a viable grant proposal for their own out-of-school time program, or in partnership with a regional nonprofit organization.
Out-of-School Time Program Design and Evaluation Fall
This course guides students through the process of designing out-of-school time programming to support youth-centered methods of teaching and learning. Course activities include readings, critical analysis, research projects, and problem-solving collaborations around issues of goal setting and logic models, scheduling, staffing, curriculum development/adaptation, and evaluation.
Stakeholders and Partnerships in Education Spring
This course examines the relationship between out-of-school time programs and their stakeholders, including families, schools, and community organizations. Literature and practical assignments focus on initiating and managing educational partnerships for community and family engagement, service learning, workforce development, and program sustainability.
One Applied Project (online)—3 credits
ED 589 Out-of-School Time Education in Action Summer
As the final requirement of the program, this course instructs students to design and implement a culminating project that reflects their learning throughout the program.
