Claudia Weisburd

Senior Advisor & Executive Director, Center for Afterschool Education
Dr. Claudia Weisburd, Senior Advisor to Foundations, focuses on integrated education and professional development systems, linking school, afterschool, community, and family for children's success. Claudia served as the founding Executive Director of Foundations' Center for Afterschool Education. Under her leadership, the Center became a national leader in advancing the educational quality of out-of-school time, providing state-of-the-art professional development, training, and publications and tools used by more than 20,000 programs across the country. She led the development of the Center's innovative approaches to homework time, and has contributed to field-building research and knowledge in the areas of professional development, evaluation, and educational supports for English language learners. Based in Foundations' satellite office in the San Francisco Bay area, Claudia remains part of Foundations' executive team, providing input and guidance for Foundations' strategic direction, and for development of publications and products.

Dr. Weisburd began her career working with the New York City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, and teaching in New York City pre-schools. She earned her Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. degrees at Cornell University, where she was a Spencer Fellow, focusing on international development, adult learning, and non-formal education, subsequently leading an urban planning and environmental education program in Senegal, conducting training for development in the Caribbean and East Africa, and teaching in France. Domestically, she continued her non-formal education work serving as Director of the Community Literacy Program at Temple University (encompassing a national ESL and service learning project), directing adult ESL training and teaching for Literacy Volunteers, NY, and creating training and outreach programs for several award-winning community based housing projects. In addition to serving on boards of directors of international development and arts organizations, she has guest lectured on university and secondary levels, authored a textbook, and published several academic, technical, and general audience articles. For Foundations, she has written and co-authored afterschool publications including Academic Content, Afterschool Style: A Notebook and Guide, GraffitiWall, Celebrate Success RFP Project, More Than Just Talk: English Language Learning in Afterschool, and Afterschool Style in Practice: 25 Skill-Building Meetings for Staff.
